The missions of both Pontchartrain Elementary School and
Tchefuncte Middle School are to create a happy and safe
environment where all children not only learn, but learn
well. The school is dedicated to providing an environment
where a child works at his or her own pace, where growth
is neither hurried nor hindered. The site is nestled among
towering pines and hardwoods off of West Causeway Approach
in Mandeville, Louisiana, and tucked away from the hustle
and bustle of nearby traffic. The atmosphere is a perfect
setting to fulfill the school's mission.
DonahueFavret Contractors was chosen to construct both schools,
combined in a single structure. The classroom wings are constructed
of masonry supported structural steel, while the Administration
areas are a conventional column-beam system with metal studs
and sheetrock walls. The project contained two gymnasiums
highlighted by exposed steel trusses under a barrel metal
roof. The entire facility is covered with American Building
Company's Loc Seam Roof Panels. The square footage totaled
150,000 and the project took 510 days to complete. Surrounding
the schools are approximately 250,000 square feet of drives
and parking areas. DFC won regional and national "Excellence
in Construction" awards of commendation and merit for
this project, sponsored by Associated Builders and Contractors.
